Duvet size guide: how to choose the right one for your bed size?

Choosing a duvet seems simple… until you find yourself faced with a jungle of dimensions: 140x200, 200x200, 220x240, 240x260… And that’s without counting the bed sizes themselves (90x190, 160x200, 180x200…) which vary from one country to another.

At Lanado , we manufacture natural wool duvets in several sizes, adapted to different standard beds in Belgium, France, and Europe. Our mission: to help you choose the right duvet size for optimal comfort, a perfect drape, and draft-free nights.

Why is the size of the duvet so important?

A duvet that's too small, and you'll spend the night pulling it towards you.
A duvet that is too big, and you risk getting too hot… or having difficulty fitting it into your cover.

🛌 The right size is the one that offers:

  • Sufficient overhang on the sides and at the foot of the bed

  • Good thermal insulation

  • An aesthetic and practical balance

👉 All this without excess fabric or a “sleeping bag” effect.

What is the ideal overhang on the sides?

The ideal fallout depends on several factors:

  • Your sleeping habits : do you sleep alone or with a partner?

  • The height of the mattress + bed base

  • The desired style (more cozy or more fitted)

Here is a simple rule:

👉 Allow at least 30 to 40 cm of overhang on each side of the bed for optimal thermal comfort.

Example :

For a 140x200 cm bed:

  • A 200x200 cm duvet = 30 cm overhang on each side → suitable

  • A 220x240 cm duvet = generous drape → ideal for winter or for two people

And for a couple: do you need one duvet or two?

That's a genuine question!
In Belgium or Germany, it is common to use two small individual duvets (e.g., 140x200 cm each) for a double bed. This allows each person to have their own thermal zone .

At Lanado , we recommend:

  • A large duvet , at least 220x240 cm, if you sleep two people.

  • A 240x260 cm size is suitable for a Queen/King bed, especially if you move around a lot.

💬 If you're sensitive to the cold and your partner isn't, you can also opt for:

  • A warmer duvet for a

  • A lighter duvet for the other

And everyone sleeps at their own temperature!

What size duvet cover should I choose?

Simple: your duvet cover should be the same size as the duvet itself .

🧺 Duvet 🧼 Cover to choose from
140x200 cm 140x200 cm
200x200 cm 200x200 cm
220x240 cm 220x240 cm
240x260 cm 240x260 cm

⚠️ Avoid oversized covers that create uncomfortable "air pockets".
A good, well-fitting cover helps the duvet stay in place .

Good news: at Lanado, it's possible.
